Backblaze Storage on Motherboard #2

For the Backblaze Motherboard we went with a Intel DG43NB ATX Motherboard.  About an hour after getting the first one up and running it failed and would not boot to the bios.  This is before we even managed to put the drives in.  With electronics, they say if something is going to fail, it will fail within the first few days.  So we are now on Motherboard number two.  With success we are up to loading the 2.0 TB Hitachi Hard Drives, should not take long to Format 45 Drives Right?

Unboxing and Testing the Backblaze Storage Pod

At RackWire.com we are always looking for new and cutting edge products.  One that came across or Radar was the Backblaze storage pod.  What is Backblaze?  Backblaze is an online storage provider that has built a reliable, low cost Storage Pod.  When shoping for a storage cloud online, customers are looking at price per Gig.  Backblaze delivers a devices that can help lower that cost to your end customers.

Initial unboxing of the Backblaze case, it is a simple and well thought out device.  With a 4U Rack Footprint, the custom case houses 4 SATA Cards, Dual Power Supplies, single motherboard and 4 GB RAM.  The catch, it can hold a whopping 45 Hard Drives!  The biggest line item cost is the drives, if you purchase 45 2-Terrabyte Drives you are looking at around 7K in drives alone.  Still overall very low cost for the amount of storage a single device can bring.

From a marketing standpoint, they did the job right.  It has been powder coated fire engine red to stand out.  It will be the most recognized device in one of our Datacenter Racks, next to a Yellow Kemp Load Balancer.
