Using WordPress User Roles

Depending on the type of site you are running in WordPress, you will want to setup the initial user registration role correctly.  When you initially install and configure WordPress it creates the default Administrator Account.  From here you will want to create additional users with various roles, and assign the new user registration with a default role.

High level these are the different user roles in WordPress 2.x-3.0:

  • Administrator – Somebody who has access to all the administration features.
  • Editor – Somebody who can publish and manage posts and pages as well as manage other users’ posts.
  • Author – Somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
  • Contributor – Somebody who can write and manage their posts but not publish them.
  • Subscriber – Somebody who can only manage their profile.

For Example, if you are running a cooking Recipe Site/Blog you would want to make the default user registration role a Contributor.  This way other people can come to your site, add recipes as Posts, and you or another Editor can approve  them.

Installing WordPress & Apps on your Hosting Plan

Site SoftwareIf you have one of our Linux Hosting Plans, and would like to get started with a WordPress CMS Site, here are the easy steps.  You can also add Multiple Domains, and Subdomains to your hosting plan as well!

Step 1. Log into RackWire.com Client Area, then Click on  “My Services”.  From there you can see you Linux Hosting account, and go to your Linux Hosting Plan Details . 

Step 2. Click the button “Login to cPanel”.  This will log you into your Contol Panel.  You can also see your account user Password on this screen, which can be used to access your FTP account ftp://yourdomain.com.

 

Step 3. **Optional - Follow this if you have more than one domain.  Once Logged Into cPanel, you can add any additional domain needed to your account that you own on RackWire.com.  To add another domain that you purchased through RackWire.com go to “Addon Domains”.  You can also add a sub domain, like “cart” to your domain to achive http://cart.mydomain.com.  If you want 2 Domains to point to the same web site or folder use “Parked Domains”.

 

Step 4. Now you are ready to Install WordPress or use the Script Installers to add applications to your hosting Plan.  For Example Click on the “Site Software” or “Fantastico De Lux” Link.  See a Video Tutorial Here.

 

Step 5. Choose the Application you want to install, such as WordPress and choose your settings.  This will then Automatically install the Application and Database for you.  You can then visit and configure the application on your own domain.

*Note – Depending on the type of installation (if using the root folder) you have to go into File Manager, navigate to the www folder and delete the index.html page.  If you still see the RackWire.com holder page after installation this might be the case, at this point the index.php wordpress page will be the new default page/application.

Installing WordPress on Windows Server 2008

This is the Quick and Easy way to Install a WordPress Website on Windows Server 2008.  Step One, Download and install the Windows Web Platform Installer.  Launch the Installer and Click on Web Applications Tab and Select WordPress.

Choose “Install”.  The next screen will ask to install the following required third Party Applications:

  • Web Deployment Tool 1.0
  • PHP 5.2.11
  • CGI
  • URL Rewrite 1.1
  • MySQL Windows Essential 5.1
  • Windows Cache Extension 1.0 for PHP 5.2

Select a root MySQL Password, I choose “FLuffy…….wait a second, get your own password.

Lucky for me, the Hyper-V VPS I am on is on an unmetered 100 MBps Connection, so the Download/Install takes minutes.  After it installs PHP and MySQL on the Windows server it will ask you to configure the new WordPress Web Application. You can install in the Default Directory, a Custom /url or a totally new Application with a Custom Domain Name.

Enter the MySQL password from step three, and click Continue.  Then you will get a Successfully installed message.

Now go to your URL/Domain and you should have the WordPress Initial Installation Screen.

Once you click on Install WordPress you will get your Admin User / Password.  Copy the Password and Click Login.  Once Logged in you can Create Pages, Add Plugins, and Choose Custom Themes.  Good luck and Happy Blogging!

Installing Web Apps, PHP, MySQL on Hyper-V Server 2008

Are you running a Hyper-V Server, or a Standalone Dedicated Server 2008, and want to utilize an use to use and install Web App, or Web Application?  Microsoft has leveraged the following Web Apps for easy Download/Install on your Web Server:

  • PHP 5.2.11
  • MySQL 5.1
  • URL ReWrite 1.1
  • SQL Server 2008 Express
  • Streaming Media Services
  • Joomla! , SugarCRM, WordPress, Textcube, nopCommerce, Moodle, SilverStripe CMS, DotNetNuke, Umbraco, Drupal, nService. Amplifeeder
  • And Many More

It is kind of hard to believe that Microsoft is leveraging all these Open Source tools on thier Platform, like SugarCRM a competing CRM product as well as MySQL.  But in my opinion, it is great!   Here is a Step by Step Guide on getting your Web Applications up and Running on MySQL/PHP:

1. First Step, go to Microsoft and install the Microsoft Web Platform.  The Installation is pretty straight forward and takes under a Minute.

2. Run the Web Platform Installer.  You can then Choose Three Catagories: What’s New, Web Platform and Web Applications.

3. Select the Applications you want to Install, such as WordPress on Windows.

4. The installer will require some dependacies for WordPress such as a MySQL Database, PHP 5.2.  It will ask for a Database user/password:

5. The installer will then ask for the Web Site Settings for the new web application, and even allow you to add new directories.

6. The Installer will complete with all the applications that were installed on your server.  Next, run the WordPress Easy Web Setup and you are up and running!

As an added bonus, there are even additional Database tools and .NET Framework 4 Beta 2.  Nice!

How to get WordPress Hosting if your Domain is hosted somewhere else?

You already own your own domain, and it is hosted somewhere other than RackWire.com or even internally.  If want to get a WordPress blog added to your site, i.e. a blog at www.YourDomain.com, here are the steps.

Step 1: Go to the App Market and sign up for a WordPress Account, by clicking “Try It Now”.

Step 2: Under Domain Options, choose “I will update my nameservers on an existing domain”.  Type in your current domain name.

Step 3: Update your DNS servers to have a new entry A record called “blog” and point it to the IP address: 67.219.60.126.  Once this propagates, you should be able to go to the custom installer located at http://yourDomain.com/wp-admin/install.php.

Step 4: Once you add this record, you can point the name servers for your domain to the rackwire name servers located at:

  • dns1.rackwire.com
  • dns2.rackwire.com

Step 5: You are now ready to start blogging.
