The 95th percentile is the smallest number that is greater than 95% of the numbers in a given set. The reason this statistic is so useful in measuring data throughput is that it gives a very accurate picture of the use and cost of the bandwidth. We take a snapshot of your bandwidth usage every 5 minutes throughout the billing period (usually 30 days). These 8,640 snapshots are then used to create the 'set' mentioned above.

All of our Colocation packages come with at least 1-5 Mbps included bandwidth. The Bandwidth usage is calculated with the 95th percentile rule. These 8,640 snapshots are then used to create the ‘set’ mentioned above. We then employ the 95th percentile rule to calculate your bandwidth usage and then bill accordingly if necessary.

The advantage to you as the customer is that you get the performance of a high-speed connection, while paying only for actual usage.

In the example above, we would take out the higher 5% of the Max In/Max Out bandwidth measurement from the monthly MRTG graph which is 884 Kbps. (You can think of this in terms of having the ability to burst above your committed bandwidth rate for about 36 hours per month without being charged an overage.)

We would then take the bottom 94% of the remaining samples taken, in this example that is 337 Kbps. Using this method each 1,000 Kbps is 1 Mbs per month. The percentage of bandwidth per Mbs would be x/1000 or 337/1000 = .337 Mbs or 107 Gb.

What is Colocation? Server Colocation is a highly economical way to run a Highly Available application, without investing in Network, UPS and Climate Controlling Redundancy. Colocation is cost effective, because you own the Hardware, and fully manage the application. We Gaurantee the Network, Power and Proper Operating Temperature. It is easy to take advantage of RackWire.com’s Enterprise Class Datacenter Colocation with all of your hosting needs. Here are the Steps to take to get your Server in our Co-Location Facility, and out of that office closet.

Step 1: Sign up for 1U, 2U, 3U or 4U Server Colcoation Here. 1U, 2U, 3U, and 4U depends on the height of the server. For Example a Dell PowerEdge R710 is a 2U server. Include your Reverse DNS (PTR Record) in the order if possible.

Step 2: Upon Payment you will receive a welcome e-mail with the 4 Dedicated IP addresses, and all necessary DNS, Gateway/Subnet Information.

Step 3: Configure your server and application with the required Network Settings, Pack You Server in a Secure Cardboard Shipping Container and Ship to:

RackWire.com Datacenter

1100 Pittsford Victor Rd.

Pittsford, NY 14534

Send a Support ticket to RackWire.com with the Tracking Number. Once the Server arrives at our Facility, it will be racked immediately.

FAQs:

What do I need to Ship with My Server?

Please send us the Power Cables and Required Rails. Any other information such as Manuals and Extra parts will not be stored By RackWire. You can include in the Packaging a Return Airbill if you would like the box shipped back.

Does RackWire.com upgrade or Maintain My Server?

No, the server is usually locked down by the client and remotely administered and updated. Should the Server Need Physical Care, such as Rebooting, Plugging in another Network Cable or Replacing a Drive, RackWire’s Staff can assist as needed.

Can I get a tour of the facility first?

Absolutely! We love nothing more but to show off our Datacenter. Please call or Contact us here to schedule an appointment. You can also get information and images of what the World Class facility looks like here.

Which Power Distribution Unit should I buy for my Co-location at RackWire.com? Our Most Popular choice of PDU’s amongst most of our Co-Location Customers is TripLite PDUMV20HVNET in the 30A/208V Flavor.

Questions to Ask yourself are:

Should I go with 120V or 230V? Generally we recommend 230V, as most equipment can handle it these days.

Is Remote Reboot Capabilities Needed?

If Remote Reboot Cabailities are needed, Tripp Lite makes a Switched, Metered Rack PDU that give IT managers the ability to remotely monitor PDU power consumption and in-rack environmental conditions, and to turn on, turn off, recycle or lock out power to each individual receptacle. This product is Tripp Lite Model # PDUMV20HVNET

Another Low Cost option is the Tripp Lite Model PDUV30HV. We can also lease you one of these models with your Colocation Cabinet for $15/mo if you want to try one out.

RackWire’s new Datacenter offers Metered Power to all Colocation customers. RackWire’s Enterprise Class Facility, built in 2008, uses revenue grade current and energy reporting on all of our new Liebert High Efficiency Transformers. This allows our clients to securely log in online and monitor their power usage for their cabinets down to the individual circuit. You only pay for the power you use, and not a standard ‘full rate’ circuit charge. This new feature means cost saving to you and your company. At most facilities if you want three circuits for redundancy, you have to pay for three circuits. With RackWire, the circuits are free, and you only pay for the power used. RackWire provides an online customer portal where you can view each individual circuit in real time.
